HDTV – Introduction

HDTV stands for High Definition Television, and if the United States, Australia and Japan have already been living. There are three key differences between HDTV and what has become known as standard definition TV regular NTSC, PAL and SECAM. The three differences are an increase in image resolution, standard widescreen 16:9 and the ability to support multi-channel audio such as Dolby Digital.

The most important aspect of HDTV, and the one that gave him his nameis the higher resolution. The standard definition NTSC broadcasts have 525 horizontal lines, and PAL broadcasts are slightly better at 625 lines. In both systems, but the actual number of lines used to rotate the image, known as the active lines the lower display. In addition, the PAL and NTSC are interlaced, that is, each image spit into two fields, a field comprising the odd lines and the other the even lines. Each frame is displayed alternately and the human braincompiles them to create a complete picture of each frame. This has a negative impact on image quality.

HDTV is broadcast in one of two formats, 720p and 1080i. The numbers refer to the number of lines of vertical resolution and the letters refer to whether the signal is progressive scan, 'p' or 'interlaced' i '. Progressive scan means that each image is shown in its entirety, rather than divided into sectors. Both systems are much better quality than PAL or NTSCPrograms.

HDTV uses 16:9 widescreen widescreen format and the right and the images are not transmitted letterbox or pan and scan. Dolby Digital multichannel audio can be used as part of an HDTV signal is broadcast, so if you have a surround sound speaker set-up you can use it to listen to the TV instead of DVD.

To receive an HDTV broadcast you need a TV or HDTV tuner or an HDTV receiver to pick-up of the air HDTV channels, cable orSat as HDTV. You also need HDTV channels that are broadcast or distributed by cable or satellite to live.

Currently, HDTV is widely used in Japan and is the norm in the United States, with most major networks distributing HDTV versions of their popular stuff. The Super Bowl 2005 led to a surge in demand for Fox Sports HDTV and cable companies scrambled to add their offer before the game. In Autralia HDTV uptake was initially slow, buthas increased since 2003.

The situation in Europe is not so bright. There is only one HDTV Broadcasting Company in Europe, Euro1080, and has only two HDTV channels, both in the 1080i format. Euro1080HDe shows the major cultural and sporting events, cinemas and clubs throughout Europe, while HD1 broadcasts sports, opera, rock music, and lifestyle programs via satellite to homes in Europe. UK satellite broadcaster Sky, the Fox proprieter RupertMurdoch plans to broadcast some HDTV content announced in 2006. The BBC has also sound over broadcast HDTV programs (it already films some programs in HD format) is produced.

But it will take a while ', HDTV in Europe with the rest of the world. The controversy created by the confirmation of plans by the British government to start switching off analogue transmitters in 2008 showed that many continue to make the transition to DVB-T. This will be used as an argumentShow that there is no appetite in Britain for a further major change in television since most people who have already "digital TV" in the form of DVB-T think.

While the television was invented by an Englishman, and Europe led the way with PAL for so long, this is a pretty sad state.
